Have you tried playing the golf links in Cabo? If not, prepare for a dreamlike atmosphere where deserts, seaside cliffs, mountains, and green tropical oases all come together to create a stunning vista. You’ll wonder how you haven’t heard of these courses before.
Only a few championship-quality courses existed in Cabo back in the early ’90s. The Cabo del Sol Ocean Course, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, received a lot of attention with its finishing holes along the ocean.
Golfing in Cabo has come a long way since then and shows no signs of slowing down. Four courses were featured in Golf Digest’s annual 100 Top Courses worldwide ranking.
Top Five Cabo Golf Links
A Cabo golf vacation should include a visit to at least one of these top five golf links.
1. Palmilla Golf Club
Palmilla is the only 27-hole layout in Cabo and Jack Nicklaus’ first Latin America signature design. It has all the hallmarks of a unique environment, boasting three distinct nines – ocean and mountain views, as well as arroyos – that can only be found in this part of the world. You can mix and match your favorite 18 from the three different 9-hole courses.
2. Cabo del Sol Ocean Course
Designed by Jack Nicklaus and ranked highest in Mexico, the Ocean Course is a strategic and dramatic mixture of desert holes and seaside stretches. However, the Nicklaus signature is the three-hole oceanfront finish, one of the most renowned climaxes in golf and a golfer’s fantasy experience. The legend himself once said, “it is the finest” piece of golf property he’s ever seen.
3. Diamante Cabo San Lucas – El Cardonal Course
Diamante has two championship golf courses, the Dunes Course and El Cardonal. The Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal is the newer of the two but has quickly earned a global reputation owing to its famous designer.
This golf link has everything from coastal sand dunes, high desert, and arroyos to lush tropical vegetation. El Cardonal boasts spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from every hole, a unique feature for Cabo’s golf courses. It’s considered a “must play” course when you’re on a Cabo golf vacation.
4. Querencia – Fazio Golf
Querencia is design record holders Tom Fazio’s first Mexican masterpiece. It’s ranked as Mexico’s no. 1 course by Golfweek magazine and has consistently landed in Golf Digest’s Top 100 worldwide.
The course is a semi-exclusive, gated residential club sits on the high hills bounded by gorges and deep arroyos. Its particular location provides an unusual mix of ocean, desert, and city views.
5. Quivira Golf Club
Perched on a hilltop near the Pacific coastline north of Cabo San Lucas, Quivira is Jack Nicklaus’ sixth Los Cabos golf course design and his second masterpiece. This 7,085-yard, 18-hole course snakes smoothly along steep cliffs and through natural dunes and desert foothills.
Quivira opened in 2014, winning “The 2014 Development of the Year” award, as well as “Best New International Golf Course” by GOLF Magazine.
