Course Description

Par 72, 7049 yards, 18 holes. All rates are for one golf cart per person. Closed on Tuesdays.

The Weiskoph layout of the Cabo Del Sol Golf Course (formerly the Desert Course) features an inland layout with expansive views of the sea from each hole. With five sets of tees, the course’s length ranges from 4,900 to 7,100 yards, making it suitable for players of various skill levels.

Shaped by extraordinary natural surroundings, the landscape offers both a stunning backdrop and an enormous challenge because of its unusual blend of desert and ocean, canyon-like arroyos, and various types of vegetation.

The layout makes use of natural river washes, small elevation changes, and dramatic bunkering. In addition to a modern practice facility, the Desert Course also features a practice putting and chipping green. Golf Digest ranks Mexico’s Desert Course as the sixth-best course nationwide.

Desert Course Holes Redesigns and Improvements

Cabo Del Sol has redesigned its Cove and Desert golf courses to please both golfers and investors.

Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design has constructed a few new holes on the Desert Course, in the picturesque mountain foothills over 100 meters above sea level. To reflect the architectural style of their new concepts, Dana Fry and Jason Straka, the course’s architects, will shortly overhaul several of the current holes. The $20+ million makeover, which will feature a new clubhouse, driving range, and agronomic revamp, is anticipated to be finished by 2025.

Hole# 1 Par 3

This is a part of the new revamp of existing holes. This hole, which was once hole No. 11 on the Desert Course, is an appealing mid-length par 3 that leads to a wide kidney-shaped green.

Hole# 2 – 592 Yards

The 2nd hole is characterized by a slight uphill slope, with the fairway rising and then descending out of sight. For long hitters, the landing area is blind and requires careful consideration. After turning slightly to the left, the fairway reveals a spectacular ocean view, but players must stay along the right side to avoid the bunkers and maximize their chances of reaching the green. Any misses to the left on the approach shot can quickly eliminate the possibility of par.

Hole# 3 – 480 Yard Par 4

From the tee on the 3rd hole, players are treated to a breathtaking view of the downhill fairway stretching out towards the ocean in the background. However, a sharp performance is required to avoid recording a bogey. Although the fairway is spacious, the long approach shot must cross a desert wash that runs in front of the green and steer clear of the bunkers located on either side of the putting surface. The two-tiered green tilts away from the players, with the smaller front right tier being more accessible than the larger back left tier. Hitting the green in regulation is not a common occurrence on this hole, and saving par will likely necessitate a creative short game.

Hole# 6 – 329 Yard Par 4

Weiskopf has designed a daring opportunity for players to take a gamble on a drivable par four at this hole. The optimal tee shot should be aimed toward the left edge of the green, and the natural terrain will help guide the ball toward the putting surface by kicking it to the right. If opting to lay up, hitting the tee ball up the right side will enable the approach shot to be played back into the slope of the green, making it easier to stick close to the flag.

Hole# 7 Par 5

This hole features a narrow fairway and a green surrounded by bunkers.

Hole# 8 – 403 Yards

The 8th hole boasts impressive aesthetics, with the fairway winding through the desert landscape and adorned with a diverse array of trees and cacti as it gradually climbs up the hill. The green is nestled into the hillside and is guarded by a deep bunker at the back, while the right side is flanked by desert. To have a clear view of the green, it is crucial to position the tee shot accurately.

Hole# 12 – Par 3

The 12th hole marks the beginning of the latest section of holes, and it presents a breathtaking do-or-die challenge over a steep ravine. Although the forward tees and fairway wrap around the right to provide a safety area, one might question the purpose of playing such a hole if one chooses to play it safely. While the greens are relatively new and challenging to hold, they are expected to become less firm with time. The false edging across the front necessitates that you carry your tee shot to the putting surface to have any chance of scoring a birdie.

Hole# 13 Par 5

Part of the new section of holes being redesigned. This hole is situated close to the highest area of the development and provides stunning, panoramic views of the interior mountains and the sparkling blue sea.

Hole# 14

Included in the new section of holes being redesigned. Despite its intimidating appearance, it is quite playable and offers a lot of visual appeal.

Hole# 15 Par 5

The 15th hole on the Desert Course, which was formerly a par 5, has been transformed into a driving range, a practice space for short games, and a provisional clubhouse.

Hole# 16 Par 5

Included in the new section of holes being revamped. This hole offers breathtaking, expansive views of the interior mountains and the glistening blue Sea of Cortes and is located not far from the development’s highest point.

Hole# 17 Par 3

Sand washes and canyon-like arroyos flank or span this hole.

Hole# 18 – 254 Yard Par 3

The current 18th hole, previously known as No. 16, is a magnificent par 3 that descends towards a spacious, sloping green bordered by hazards on the left and front sides. The recently added black tee measures 254 yards. To reach the center of the green, a powerful shot of 254 yards is required, and the breathtaking view of the ocean at the back offers the most stunning scenery on the golf course. The left side is lined with desert, so approaching from the right would be the best strategy for achieving success.

Updates

Five additional holes were added to The Cabo Del Sol Golf Course on November 23rd, 2022. These holes are situated on the property’s mountainside and offer panoramic views of the Sea of Cortes and the coastline.

The architects stated that the five new holes (12 through 16) on the Desert Course are unique and distinct from any other holes. Although the holes may appear daunting at first glance, they are highly manageable from a gameplay perspective. Additionally, the course boasts an array of visually stunning elements.

Two new holes which will be added much higher up on the slope will be constructed starting in late 2023 or early 2024.

In addition, the Temporary Cabo Del Sol Clubhouse Facility and Driving Range were likewise opened in November.

Currently, the original layout of the Desert Course has 13 holes that remain unaltered and are in exceptional shape. However, their sequence has been rearranged, and they are now played in a different order.

Regrettably, over the last four years, it has become apparent that the Cabo del Sol development prioritizes real estate over golf. Specifically, at the Desert Course, they are removing golf holes to make room for condominiums, and are consequently required to construct new holes on alternative terrains. Given these circumstances, it is challenging to assess the course at the moment, and one can only hope that once the construction concludes, a well-designed routing and layout will emerge.
